The purpose of a curriculum map (CM) is to expressly define the major learning objectives and activities within a course, program, and University. The CM is an easy-to-follow visual tool that allows all stakeholders to understand the major objectives within a problem. Often, the curriculum map contains developmental milestones from beginning to proficiency, as primary learning objectives are introduced and reinforced within the course sequence. CMs are used by instructors to show coherence and the interconnectedness of the curriculum.
Assessment professionals utilize curriculum maps to validate learning and milestone outcomes. With curriculum maps, students have a better understanding of the purpose of the degree program and how each course plays an important role in their systematic learning.
